Sparv Embedded

Sparv Embedded

Sparv Embedded AB is situated in Linköping, Sweden, and was founded in 2012.

Sparv Embedded develops and produces sensor equipment for data collection in the lower parts of the atmosphere. Our focuses are ease of use, portability and flexibility. We offer both off-the-shelf solutions and customized versions.

Windsond is the lightest radiosonde system on the market. The sondes require a small amount of helium and have a very little environmental impact. The sondes can be reused for an unprecedented low cost per sounding.

The modular sensor system Sparvio makes it easy for customers to do measurements from UAVs and other moving platforms. It can also be used for other environmental studies and lab experiments.

Flexible sensor system for UAVs and more

The sensor system Sparvio is a modular system for data collection with logging, real-time telemetry and visualization, supporting a range of sensors. It is designed to start immediate measurements without any further integration. Sparvio supports a large number of simultaneously connected modules and can freely be rearranged by the user thanks to the universal connectors.

Today Sparvio offers sensors with the system to measure parameters such as temperature, humidity, winds, carbon dioxide, ozone, methane and particulates. We are happy to support more sensors on customer request.

For ultimate flexibility, our developers opted to make each sensor smart. Instead of keeping all logic and calibration in a central data logger, our small adapter boards are loaded with a software driver for the sensor. Now even third-party sensors become plug and play and can be hot-swapped in the field.

Lightweight and reusable radiosonde

Windsond is a miniature GPS radiosonde system by Sparv Embedded, whose focus on portability and low operating costs make its instruments perfect for frequent use in the field.

The Windsond radiosonde only needs a nine gram balloon and about 30 liters of helium for low altitude soundings, making it extremely portable. The standard Windsond system can track up to eight sondes per radio receiver.  An extension of Windsond which supports more than 30 radiosondes simultaneously has made headlines in the USA, and Sparv has now extended this further, supporting over 100 sondes in the air.

We also offer Windsond as a “reusable” option equipped with dual cut-down mechanisms, strobe light and loudspeaker to ease recovery of the sonde. The unique hardware features in combination with special software attributes makes recovery of sondes very possible. We have customers launching the same sonde over ten times. Recovery of sondes works best for soundings where the sonde is cut down from the balloon below four kilometers altitude. The maximum altitude for Windsond is about nine kilometers.

The radiosondes are easily managed on the ground using one of our radio receivers connected to a laptop installed with the Windsond software. Receivers can connect to the laptop via USB or Bluetooth.

All the above mentioned features, in combination with the user-friendly software makes Windsond highly appreciated by its users.

Windsond Summary:

  • Uniquely small size
  • Save precious helium and canister size
  • Real-time wind, temperature and humidity profiles
  • Measure multiple sondes simultaneously
  • Predict and control landing location
  • Reusable sondes for best economy
  • Reliable sonde recovery even days later
  • User-friendly ground station software
  • Outputs over 10 data formats, including WRF and CSV
