Raymetrics hosts its own modeling system, namely the RFS (Raymetrics integrated Forecasting System), which uses proprietary algorithms to integrate all available data streams and numerical models and provide optimal estimates of the atmospheric state.

  • Due to its modular nature RFS can be used in a great number of applications at various scales (synoptic to local) depending on customer needs
  • Being an innovative tool in itself RFS can also be used to support scientific proposals and projects: Radiative impacts of natural/anthropogenic particles, air-sea interactions, health impacts, severe weather formation, climate change etc.. can all be studied using RFS

3D scanning LIDARs are now being used by open-pit mines and other heavy industries to track and better understand airborne pollution problems. Since 2011 Raymetrics has been providing remote dust tracking services to industry.

For each service, Raymetrics provides a LIDAR, GPS, weather station and an in-situ particle counter. The service takes approximately one week (and should be repeated at several intervals to account for weather changes and seasonal variation). Service deliverables include a customized report on airborne pollution plus all raw data.

Uses:

  • Identify and categorize pollution plumes and sources
  • Provide data on level of airborne pollution (for air quality)
  • Early warning system for incoming dust (e.g. for local towns)
  • Assess long-range transport potential of pollution
  • Allow for targeted spraying to damp airborne dust
  • Track dust from individual events (e.g. blasts in mines)
  • Provide peace of mind to local populations and government

Accurate profiling of atmospheric temperature and humidity is a prerequisite for many meteorological studies, including nowcasting, model evaluation, and assimilation. Unfortunately, existing instrumentation lacks either the temporal or vertical resolution required for such application.

To fill this gap, Raymetrics S.A., a global leader in lidar (lidar detection and ranging) technology, is developing a new state-of-the-art temperature and humidity lidar instrument. Based on the lidar technique the new product can provide measurements of temperature and humidity from near the ground up to few kilometers, with vertical resolution down to few meters and time of the order of few seconds.

The measurements are based on accurate observation of spectral signature of atmospheric molecules and their changes with ambient temperature. The new system integrates finding from leading research institutes developed during the final decade, into robust and reliable lidar that can cover requirements for a wide range of application.

The system can be optimized either for Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) monitoring, or observation in the middle and upper troposphere. The interpretations of the data are done using proprietary algorithms that exploit the full information content on the measurements, delivering consistently better results than even state-of-the-art retrieval techniques.

The 2010 Icelandic eruption caused massive disruption to air traffic. Many other volcanic events are continuously causing severe disturbance to world air traffic such as cancellation of flights and closing of airspaces and airports, in Latin America, Asia, North America, Australia among others.

"The new LIDAR network will significantly improve our overall ability to monitor and forecast the distribution of volcanic ash over the UK. Our forecasts are used by partners at the National Air Traffic Service to make decisions on flight safety across UK airspace, based on the safety thresholds set by the Civil Aviation Authority and the International Civil Aviation Organisation."

3D CLOUD BASE

Cloud base height is currently measured using ceilometers, which are in reality low spec LIDAR systems. LIDAR is therefore already the standard method of determining cloud base height. 

Each runway often has more than one ceilometer.

A single 3D scanning LIDAR can measure total ceiling - cloud base in multiple locations, and offer forecasters information about near-future cloud base.

3D Scanning LIDARs can provide:

  • Incoming cloud base for near-future forecasting
  • Total cloud cover
  • 3D cloud base (in case cloud is not directly above ceilometer)
  • Excellent range (up to 15km with good SNR)
  • Particle distinction (dust, volcanic ash, ice/water clouds, smoke, etc)
  • Remote visibility / fog detection

Raymetrics' software now performs auto-picking of cloud base (and other atmospheric layers, such as the PBL or aerosol layers). Automatic particle distinction is also available (may require system upgrade).
