NOVIMET is a technology solution provider in hydrometeorology.

NOVIMET has developed a new technology to measure rainfall by radar. This innovation is based on the extraction software ZPHI™, the only truly operational software on the market able to exploit plainly the information of a polarimetric radar.

Protected by three patents, ZPHI™ allows the mapping of rain in a radius of 60km around the radar, with a resolution of 25 ha and a precision similar to that of rain and without using any data from rain gauges.

NOVIMET offers now its own radar HYDRIX™. A compact and lightweight radar that can be installed on existing infrastructure (telecom towers, water towers, silos, etc).

This innovative technology has already attracted businesses (water operators, farms etc) and public authorities in order to optimize the management of water and hydrological risk.

The HYDRIX® weather radar proposed by NOVIMET is a specialized radar for rainfall measurement. Associated to the ZPHI® software, it offers the same precision as 11000 rain gauges spread over a radius of 60 km.

HYDRIX® radar operates at X band and possesses the Doppler and polarimetric capability. At X band, an accurate antenna resolution is obtained with a moderate antenna size (1.5 m diameter). Thus wind resistance (to 180 km/h) of the positioner may be achieved without radome. The interest of operating without radome is two fold:

  • When raining over the radome, a water film develops, that induces a severe insertion loss and biases the radar calibration. Hydrophobic painting on the radome is not a practical solution since it loses its property after six months of outside exposure. Operating without radome allows avoiding this major inconvenient
  • The radome increases significantly the total mass of the system and increases infrastructure constraint and complexity of installation. The HYDRIX® antenna of the offset type has been specified for particularly low side lobes (<-30 dB), which reduces the ground clutter and improves the radar visibility in complex terrain

The latest generation of HYDRIX radar embeds the whole radar electronics in the pedestal, which is airtight and cooled by an air-conditioning unit. Thus, the radar is fully protected against outdoor aggression such as dust salted fog or insects.

The ZPHI ® software implements three patents brought by CNRS to NOVIMET, CNRS becoming a share holder of the company.

In 2017, NOVIMET set a fourth patent which improved the algorithm by a better consideration of the spatial variability of precipitation.

ZPHI ® takes advantage of “dual polarization” radar technology to extract the value of the intensity of rain with unprecedented precision.

ZPHI ® features are:

  • Measurement of the rain rate on the ground, with precision better than a gauge
  • Separation of precipitation echoes from clutters (ground clutter or sea)
  • Classification of different types of precipitations (rain, snow, sleet, hail).

The specific advantages of ZPHI ® lie in the fact that:

  • It corrects the estimation of the rain rate from the attenuation effects (for C-band and X-band)
  • It adapts itself to the natural variability of the rain, adjusting automatically the convertion “radar signal → rain intensity”, without degrading the spatial resolution of the input data…
  • It allows you to check the internal absolute calibration of the radar.
    It has a module for classification of types of precipitations also suitable for attenuated band frequencies

The ZPHI ® algorithm is applicable to X-band (~ 9 GHz), C-band (~ 5 GHz) and S-band (~ 3 GHz).

RAINPOL® is a web-based interface. It allows:

  • to achieve specific treatment of hydrometeorological radar data.
  • to view the data on a basemap.
  • to be configured according to the needs of the client and the intended applications. It can be delivered with a rainfall-runoff model assimilating online measurements of precipitation and delivering in real-time flood forecasting. In addition, RAINPOL® platform is scalable. If the customer wants to implement new applications, especially commercial applications Novimet can implement them. Revenue from these commercial applications can participate in ROI of the overall system.

NOVIMET ensures the real time data distribution in a format compatible with your information system, for the following informations:

  • Rainfall during the last ten minutes.
  • Accumulated rainfall during the past hour.
  • Accumulated rainfall during the last 24 hours.
  • Accumulated rainfall from a specific date/time.
  • Classification of the nature of the precipitation (rain, snow, hail).
  • Animation of the rainfall (or snowfall) of the past two hours and anticipated rainfall fpr the next two hours.

Upon request:

  • Rainfall warning on a specific spot, with definition of the integration time and of the threshold and ceiling to be reached for triggering the warning
  • Customized area integrated rainfall (for example, over catchments and sub-catchments)
  • Customized animation
  • Impact study on the use of radar rainfall data instead of rain gauge data in your information system
