The boundary layer, the first few kilometres of the Earth's atmosphere, is the most turbulent, chaotic and rapidly-changing. Yet there is a significant gap in observations in this region, which fundamentally limits our understanding and forecast skill.

Above the Earth's surface, existing in-situ observations are limited to disposable sondes and sensors mounted on crewed aircraft. Improvements to these existing observation networks have stagnated and even receded in some regions. This is due to practical and economic limitations to quality and spatio-temporal resolution. Namely increasingly high marginal cost, low propensity to automation and environmental impact from disposability and use of non-renewable resources.

New technology and methodologies are required to unlock greater atmospheric understanding and forecast skill. MetSprite takes a new approach, utilising UAS to repeatedly profile the boundary layer and beyond. MetSprite’s reusability enables economical use of high quality sensing systems. Combining this with greater spatio-temporal resolution and automation addresses the practical limits to the atmospheric observation gap.

Menapia have been developing the MetSprite since 2020 and we are now ready to reveal our capable and robust solution.

Our mission is to accelerate the skill improvement of weather forecasting by building networks of vertically-profiling UAS with unprecedented levels of autonomy and harsh environment capability. These novel profiles of the boundary layer and beyond will fill a gap in the global observing system which no other technology can—with unprecedented precision, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness compared to any existing observation technology. This will ultimately result in less social economic sensitivity to weather and our changing climate.

Ground Control & Weather Station 

MetSprite comes with a dedicated GCS that provides telemetry and UAV control. Internet enabled through 4G or Ethernet as well as a local WiFi hotspot for the tablet connection.

The RTK basestation provides error corrections for precision UAV positioning.

An internal battery acts as an uninterruptible power supply, providing hours of runtime.

Within the weather station’s Barani MeteoShield is a MetSensor (identical to MetSprite’s), a reference for UAV measurements.

A sonic anemometer provides a 2.5D wind measurement.

Flight Training
Our 2 day training course covers piloting, flight planning & basic maintenance and is a requirement for operational authorisation. The course includes simulator training, real world control, setup and planning of MetSprite missions & manual flight and a classroom session covering airspace, flight envelope, technical details,, meteorological and ground risk assessment. We can also provide guidance on programming custom missions.
 
Mission Planning
For customers using MetSprite for specific profiling, we can create bespoke mission plans in order to reduce your development costs and help you get your data faster and with lower risk. We take the time to discuss your needs and the aims of the operation. With our combined engineering, airspace and meteorological expertise, we ensure the mission plan will fit the site requirements and follow CAA guidelines for UAV flight whilst still providing the data you require.
 
Running Operations
Give yourself peace of mind with Menapia’s ‘Mission as a Service’. Our expert knowledge will provide the data you need without taking time away from what matters to your business.

We provide a dedicated drone pilot for the duration of the operation, carry out risk assessments and complete necessary CAA authorisations. You receive the data in near real-time in the format that suits you; netCDF, CSV, WMO BUFR/TEMP/PILOT, with API integrations.
