SKIRON3D® is a high-end, state-of-the-art Doppler lidar system ideally suited to measure winds and detect hazardous wind phenomena such as wind shear, gusts, turbulence, and microbursts. SKIRON3D® provides all capabilities to meet the requirements for these applications. Together with our METEOR 60DX weather radar and an LLWAS system, SKIRON3D® constitutes Leonardo’s solution for an all-weather, three-dimensional detection of hazards that pose serious threats to aviation.

SKIRON3D® employs a MOPA (Master-Oscillator-Power-Amplifier) configuration, and combines an all-fiber technique that enables excellent beam quality with high pulse energy for long-range measurements. The lidar is equipped with a comprehensive BITE (Built-In Test Equipment) system and offers full remote surveillance and control capability based on Leonardo’s Ravis® maintenance tool.

Leonardo’s proprietary wind lidar system offers a cost-effective and modular design featuring maximum use of COTS components and a high number of LRUs (Line-Replaceable Units) and sub-LRUs for low-cost spare parts. Special features such as a proprietary designed scanner without slip rings, air-knife no-contact optical window cleaning, and an integrated camera for lidar northing using the sun, moon, or a fixed target reflect the latest findings from research and technology.

The METEOR 700C is a high-powered C-Band weather radar designed for the precise quantitative evaluation of precipitation and wind fields in the mean latitude regions. It is particularly well suited for the everyday needs and applications of national meteorological services seeking the best price/performance ratio in terms of coverage, broadband measurement applications, reliability and lifecycle costs.

The METEOR 700C baseline configuration includes a 250KW transmitter. Alternatively, the METEOR 735C boosts the peak power to more than 400KW. It is driven by a solid-state modulator with graceful degradation providing fault-tolerant operation and higher system availability.

The METEOR 700C systems are supplied with GDRX® and Rainbow®, ensuring optimum data quality for the accurate measurement of rain rates, precise detection of severe weather phenomena as well as tracking and nowcasting of such events at medium ranges.

Both the METEOR 700C and METEOR 735C are available with single or dual polarization (DP). The dual polarization option enhances the measurement of precipitation intensity and makes way for the categorization of different types of hydrometeor such as drizzle, rain, hail and snow. Thanks to its high-powered transmitter, the METEOR 735C operates in simultaneous DP mode with almost no loss of sensitivity compared to conventional 250KW single-polarized systems.

The METEOR 1700C is a high-powered C-Band weather radar designed for precise weather detection and warning in clutter-polluted environments. The sophisticated system features a fully coherent 250kW klystron transmitter to deliver excellent data quality and maximum clutter suppression. This is particularly important for close-to-ground observations required by airport users.

The METEOR 700S is available with single or dual polarization (DP). The dual polarization option further reduces the impact of rainfall attenuation, improves rain rate accuracy and makes way for the categorization of different types of hydrometeor such as drizzle, rain, hail and snow.

RainSNIP, our tool for scientific radar data analysis and display, is a standalone software package that contains a set of applications to read, manipulate, and display radar data. RainSNIP is available for standard operating systems (Windows and Linux).

The use of weather radar in a network for quantitative precipitation estimation becomes essential for most of the national meteorological services. This requires well-calibrated and coherent radars even in heterogeneous weather radar networks. To meet these conditions and to facilitate the use and the analysis of the radar data by researchers and scientists, Leonardo developed an ensemble of practical functions in the software package RainSNIP.

Main functionalities

RainSNIP is equipped with a radar data interface, which supports reading polar raw data and key Rainbow® products. A graphical data viewer allows navigating through PPI slices of a volume as well as analysing and extracting data from the full data set to e.g. CSV files. With the RainSNIP radar inter-comparison application, data of neighbouring radars can easily be compared. The RainSNIP data conversion application is suited to import different standard radar data formats. Area selection, zoom, time navigation, data moment selection, data extraction, data query, and geographical coordinates are conveniently handled via mouse cursor.
