The National Forecast Services Group focuses on the delivery of weather, climate and ocean services to the general public and emergency services customers. Working in close partnership with the Data & Digital and Business Solutions Groups, it provides the capability to support the delivery of specialist services to our priority industry and government customers. The Group organises its functions via four Programs: National Operations, Public Safety, Community Forecasts and Community Outreach. The Bureau’s regional and state offices in capital cities are managed by the GM National Operations, who is a direct report to the Group Executive. Overall, there are 360 people working in the Group with professionals from weather, climate hydrology, engineering and communications with an annual operating budget of $57M.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Jayasuriya was General Manager, Public Safety at the Bureau of Meteorology, where his portfolio covered all natural disasters except earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. He is one of the six members of the Expert Group established by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to advise the global community on Climate, Water and Food Security.
