The Geolux HydroStation is a compact platform that integrates several Geolux products in a single, easy to install, package. It contains everything required to set-up a hydrological station for monitoring water level and discharge. HydroStation contains not only the required instruments, but also a GPRS-enabled datalogger, a backup battery and a solar panel to provide continuous power on remote locations.
 
The standard version of HydroStation comes equipped with a 20 W solar panel, a 20 Ah lithium battery, a GPRS-enabled SmartObserver datalogger, a Geolux LX-80-15 radar-based water level sensor and a Geolux RSS-2-300 W surface velocity radar. The battery and datalogger are enclosed in a vandal-proof, watertight IP68-rated aluminum enclosure. The solar panel is attached to a adjustable holder which allows easy orientation of the solar panel during station setup.

The HydroStation is equipped with mounting brackets that make installation on an existing structure - such as a bridge - straightforward and easy. There is no need to separately install solar panel, instruments, battery and datalogger on site, and to need to install wiring when doing on-site work. Instead, all the instruments and power lines are already connected. This approach reduces the amount of work required to perform on-site, which is convenient when you need to install multiple hydrological stations in limited time.

The Geolux SmartObserver data logger is a highly-integrated device used to read the data from attached instruments and deliver this data to Geolux HydroView, a cloud-based data management software. SmartObserver uses a GPRS connection for sending the data to the server, with other communication options such as LoRaWAN available on demand.
 
The data logger contains internal Flash memory which is used to provide a data storage backup in the case that wireless communication is disabled. Data stored inside the internal Flash memory can be read by connecting the data logger to a PC through an RS-232 interface.
 
Integrated power management is an important feature of SmartObserver data logger. The integrated battery charger allows users to connect the data logger directly to a solar panel or small wind turbine and to the battery; the SmartObserver will take care of managing battery charging, thus eliminating the need to purchase and install a separate battery charger. SmartObserver supports different battery types, such as lead-acid, NiMH, NiCd, LiFePO4 and Li+.

SmartObserver data logger uses several data interfaces to communicate with the attached instruments. The primary interface is MODBUS, and the data logger supports two MODBUS lines. The data logger also contains two CAN bus lines, an SDI-12 bus, and analog 4-20 mA interface.
 
All instruments within the monitoring station can be connected to the power supply through SmartObserver data logger. SmartObserver contains two output power lines to power the instruments, and the data logger shuts down these two power lines between periodic measurements in order to reduce battery power consumption. Additionally, the secondary output power line can be configured to conditionally power up, to further reduce power consumption – for example, it may make sense to disable some instruments under certain conditions, such as disabling surface velocity radars when the level meter detects that the river bed is dry.
