GAMIC is a developer, manufacturer, and provider of Radar Systems, Signal, and Data-Processing equipment and software for Doppler weather radars since 1988.

Our systems were purchased and are successfully operated by National Weather Services (DWD – Germany, BMKG – INDONESIA, CSG-CNES French Guyana Space Launching Center, SMN – Argentina), as well as radar research facilities (Bonn, Jülich, Karlsruhe, Berlin).

Currently, the DWD (German) network of 18 operational weather radars is using our signal processing and software, as well as our support and development capacities within a long maintenance and support contract.

GAMIC designs and manufactures ENIGMA IV, the advanced weather radar signal processor for single and dual polarization. It comprises two components – the intermediate frequency digitizer (IFD) converts your radar output to a stable and high quality digital signal while the host provides clean output data by applying powerful algorithms and corrections.

State-of-the-art signal processing hardware

The ENIGMA IV signal processor consists of a powerful host PC (ENIGMA PC) and a 19″ companion device called IFD (Intermediate Frequency Digitizer). The IFD can be installed either in an IT rack or head-mounted behind the radar antenna. It can be used in any common weather radar installation.

The IFD controls the transmit timing of the connected radar by applying trigger signals and performing the data acqusition accordingly. It comes with three separate input channels for horizontal, vertical, and burst (transmit signal / reference) signal measurement which enable full dual polarization capability. The IF signal is digitized at an intermediate frequency of 60 MHz (other frequencies optional) and the radar echo data is tagged with corresponding time and elevation/azimuth angle information. For optimum sensitivity and dynamic range a digital filter is applied which matches the transmitted pulse length perfectly. The generated raw echo data is provided to the host PC through an optical fibre connection of 1 Gbit/s for further processing.

The ENIGMA IV signal processor is very versatile and can be used for magnetron, klystron, or solid-state radars. In case of non-solid-state radars, the IFD is able to measure the IF frequency and apply an AFC (automatic frequency control) for proper receiving. For solid-state radars the complete output signal is generated by the IFD utilizing pulse compression technology.

Powerful correction algorithms

To get the best out of your weather radar data, ENIGMA IV comes with powerful algorithms to ensure high data quality and reduced disturbances. Digital Doppler velocity processing enables more accurate velocity data and better clutter mitigation. The velocity based clutter filters provide 40 dB or better clutter rejection, resulting in less ground clutter. Dual polarization based rain and gas attenuation correction are inevitable for reliable rain rate retrievals, especially for sensitive X-band radars. Further data improvement features comprise the removal of multi-trip echoes, RF interferences, and sun spokes.

ENIGMA IV is highly configurable, including speckle remover (via reflectivity, velocity, spectrum width, or dual pol moment), thresholding (NOISE, CCOR, SIGPOW, RHOHV, SQI), and KDP interpolation.

New features for enhanced data

GAMIC’s signal processor ENIGMA IV just got better with some new features to get even more out of your data. Those new features include the following:

  • Fuzzy logic classification and flagging of range gates for ground clutter, multi-trip echoes, wind-turbine clutter, RF interference, and sun spokes
  • Improved random phase multip-trip detection and mitigation
  • Adaptive clutter filtering
  • Additional output moments (clutter phase alignment, standard deviation, SQI 2nd/3rd trip, classification flags, real and complex cross spectrum)
  • Improved thresholding including the new classifier flags

Comprehensive output moments

Besides typical single polarization radar moments reflectivity (Z), radial velocity (V), and spectral width (W), ENIGMA IV provides output of enhanced dual polarization moments which are essential for any contemporary processing and further usage of weather radar data. Those comprise ZDR, KDP, RHOHV, PHIDP, and much more. All radar moments are provided uncorrected and corrected.

For comprehensive data quality and signal analysis, ENIGMA IV serves some more output variables like signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), signal quality index (SQI), clutter power (CCOR), power spectrum (DFT), and more. GWSP Weather Signal Extractor

GAMIC’s weather signal extractor GWSP is designed to augment ASR/ATC radars with a comprehensive weather data output. It uses the existing surveillance radar data to detect and report severe weather situations in the surrounding area. The GWSP has been installed over 50 times and is operating successfully for more than 10 years by German, Swiss, and Canadian Air Forces, and at Schiphol airport (Amsterdam, NL).

Seamless integration into existing infrastructure

GSWP extracts information from ASR (Air Search / Airport Surveillance Radars) or ATC (Air Traffic Control) radars in parallel to their tracking function and does not conflict with the radar’s main functions. It simply makes use of the already existing but previously discarded radar signal of the surrounding weather. GAMIC’s weather signal extractor is available for radars with magnetron, klystron, or solid-state transmitters.

Setup and functionality

The GWSP constists of three parts. The adaption box (ABOX) captures IF or I/Q data from any type of primary radar and transforms it into WSP data format. The weather signal processor (WSP) corrects and processes the signal to meterological moments (Z, V, W). Last part is the weather data processor (WDP) which generates weather products for prediction and tracking of weather events. GAMIC’s comprehensive weather radar software suite FROG-MURAN can be used optionally to get the full potential out of your weather data.

Output of critical weather data

GWSP provides fast and precise weather data by processing and identifying severe precipitation, wind shear, and other critical weather events like microbursts and gust fronts. The corrected and processed output data are displayed in real-time and color-coded weather parameters: reflectivity (Z), radial velocity (V) and turbulence (W). The data can be sent in suitable formats to operating stations, i.e. ASTERIX CAT008 or other high resolution formats.

Webview is the latest software application developed by GAMIC. This lightweight tool enables flexible and hardware independent display of weather radar data in any web browser – desktop or mobile. Webview provides data from single radar sites up to multi-radar networks and serves data in real-time or archive mode.

Flexible contemporary application

With GAMIC’s Webview, radar data and products can be displayed from everywhere. The only preconditions are an up-to-date web browser and network access. This enables various and flexible application scenarios, from in-office product monitoring to on-site data inspection and on-the-go weather checkup.

Vector map underlay

To allow a detailed geographical assignment of weather radar data, Webview includes an extensive vector map underlay, based on OpenStreetMaps. The level of detail is set dynamically depending on the current zoom level. Webview default is a clear and straightforward map style, which however can be adjusted or completely replaced by a user-defined style.

Webview components

The final visualization in a client’s web browser is the core feature of GAMIC’s Webview. However, its basis is the Webview host which serves radar products from a central database. This can be fed by the weather radar product generation from our software suite FROG-MURAN. Optionally, a local tile server can be set up to provide vector tiles for the underlay map which is thereby independent from internet access.

Enhanced forecasting possibilities for efficiency and safety

Weather Impact on Mining

The core of mining is to get value out of the ground. However, a threat for the mining industry comes from above. Severe weather like heavy precipitation, thunderstorms, and heavy winds can have a major impact on operation cycles and force temporary shutdowns of mining sites.

Thunderstorms with lightning and hail pose a risk for both human workers and working equipment. Strong winds can interrupt blasting operations. Heavy rain can disable access routes and close whole sites.

Not only open-cast mining but also open transport and embarkation of material from mining in general suffers from precipitation. It reduces maximum payload and thus shipping efficiency.

All in all, severe weather can have many negative impacts on mining, resulting in an unnecessary economic disadvantage.

Lack of radar data

The problem is, mines are often located in sparsely populated regions with lacking weather radar coverage. Forecasting is based on models which provide only a coarse spatial resolution of several kilometers and temporal resolution of several hours.

To reduce the negative impact of weather on mining, short-time forecasting is necessary and inevitably associated with the input data of a high resolution weather radar.

GAMIC X-band Radar fills the gap

While most weather services rely on S- and C-band weather radars due to their large coverage, the smaller and more cost-effective X-band radars have several advantages.

The GAMIC X-band weather radar systems GMWR offer high sensitivity and a high spatial resolution. This way they are able to detect even small but intense shower cells and provide highly reliable input data for nowcasting systems. Optionally, the dual polarization feature can provide additional information about hydrometeors, i.e. the kind of precipitation.

GMWR radar systems provide a compactness that allows flexible installation scenarios as well as transportable and even mobile radars, e.g. mounted on a trailer or truck. All these features make our GMWR radar systems the perfect basis for reliable and short-term weather forecasts to reduce downtime and increase safety of any mining site.

GMWR-25-WS X-band Doppler Weather Radar

The GMWR-25-WS is a cost-effective X-band Doppler weather radar for reliable surveillance of critical weather around airports and other important infrastructures. It is designed for operation ranges up to 32 NM (60 km) and has very high update rates of less than 12 seconds per 360° scan. One major benefit is its seamless integration into ATC infrastructure.

Standard and ATC data output

All GAMIC radars provide data in standard weather radar data formats. For optimal
compatibility with air traffic controller (ATC) consoles and sharing data with other air
traffic control agencies, the GMWR-25-WS additionally provides output formats
ASTERIX CAT008 and CAT009.

Advanced signal processing

All GAMIC radars include our digital receiver and signal processor ENIGMA which allows rapid scanning and analysis products of scientific quality and accuracy. Digital Doppler velocity processing enables accurate velocity measurement.

The processing allows filtering of the input data, including clutter suppression (40 dB or better) resulting in less ground clutter, and the removal of distortions, speckles, interferences, and more. The result is clean weather output data which can be further processed as meteorological products.

Fast and reliable hardware

The GMWR-25-WS is built with a fan beam antenna providing continuous 360° azimuthal scans and comes with single polarization. A very high rotational speed allows update rates of less than 12 seconds per turn. The GMWR-25-WS uses a stable, well proven design based on standard radar technology and built with a minimum number of components. This enables a system with low investment and small operating costs while being highly reliable. Its hardware is fully solid state, except the magnetron transmitter. Hardware maintenance can be performed by any local technical service experienced in radar maintenance. The radar is designed with easy replaceable sub-units (line replacement unit, LRU) which allows quick repair and reduced downtime.

X-band Doppler weather radar with single or dual polarization

The GMWR-25-SP/DP is a cost-effective and flexible X-Band Doppler weather radar with magnetron transmitter. It is designed for operation with ranges up to 150 km and uses Doppler technology for accurate radial wind velocity measurements. The dual polarization option enables attenuation correction, advanced product generation, and hydrometeor classification.

Well proven and reliable hardware

Our GMWR-25-SP/DP radars use a stable, well proven design based on standard radar technology and built with a minimum number of components. This enables a system with low investment and small operating costs while being highly reliable. Hardware maintenance can be performed by any local technical service experienced in radar maintenance. The GMWR-25-SP/DP hardware is fully solid state, except the magnetron transmitter. Alternatively, we also offer weather radar systems with solid state transmitters, the GMWR-400/1000-SST.

GMWR-25-SP/DP radars are available with single or dual polarization. For dual polarization we offer our GAMIC designed symmetric splash plate antenna providing perfect conditions for ideal dual polarization measurements. If you are not sure which type of radar you need, feel free to contact us.

The GMWR-400/1000-SST is a cost-effective, flexible, and entirely solid state X-Band Doppler weather radar. It is designed for operation ranges up to 100 km and uses Doppler technology for accurate radial wind velocity measurements. Its dual polarization feature offers attenuation correction, advanced product generation, hydrometeor classification, and detection of non-meteorological objects.

New possibilities with solid state

Core feature of our GMWR-400/1000-SST is its entirely solid state design, including the transmitter. This novel technology offers enhanced dual polarization features, like simultaneous or alternating polarized signals, enabling new approaches for scientific issues. The higher possible pulse repetition frequency (PRF) allows measurement of higher wind velocities, a feature for regions suffering from strong winds and storms.

The GMWR-400/1000-SST is built with a minimum number of components and few wearing parts. This enables low investment and small operating costs while being highly reliable.
