Apogee offers two types of pyranometers; our original silicon-cell models and our new line of thermopile pyranometers, both of which are now ISO 9060:2018 Class C rated (previously known as second class).

Silicon-cell solar radiation sensor models are excellent for applications that do not require the higher accuracy and cost of a thermopile pyranometer. They are less expensive and have a faster response time, but have higher errors under cloudy conditions. Our new cost-effective thermopile pyranometers features a blackbody thermopile detector that provides a much broader and more uniform spectral response for better performance in all atmospheric conditions that compares favorably to Class A thermopile pyranometers at a fraction of the cost.

Applications include shortwave radiation measurement in agricultural, ecological, and hydrological weather networks, measurement of global solar radiation, and optimizing photovoltaic systems.

Accurate measurement of air temperature

Apogee Instruments’ fan-aspirated radiation shield works with several temperature and humidity sensors to provide research-grade measurements with minimal power consumption. It is ideal for solar-powered sites.

Rugged, Low-power Fan
The fan has an ingress protection (IP) rating of 55, virtually eliminating moisture and dust ingress. At full speed the power requirement is 1 W (80 mA at 12 V DC). To conserve power fan speed can be reduced, via pulse width modulation (PWM), to 0.3 W at night or when wind speed is greater than 3 m s-1 without loss of accuracy. If the fan is continuously operated at full speed lifetime is rated at 50,000 hours (5.7 years). The fan includes a tachometer, allowing RPM to be mounted to detect obstruction of the fan.

Aerodynamic Shape
The curved inlet facilitates the reduction of air into the shield through the Coandã effect (tendency of fluid to follow a convex surface). The tapered diameter of the internal surface enhances air velocity through the Venturi effect (reduction in fluid pressure after flowing through a constriction). Both effects contribute to more efficient air flow and allow for a lower power fan than other fan-aspirated radiation shields on the market.

Sensor Compatibility
Various humidity and temperature sensors work with the shield through the use of adapter plugs. Standard adapter plugs are available for the Apogee ST-110 thermistor, Apogee ST-300 PRT, and the EE08-SS air temperature/relative humidity probe. Upon request, custom plugs are also available for sensors such as the Vaisala HMP110, Campbell Scientific CS215, Rotronic HC2-S3, or a combination of temperature sensor and relative humidity probe.
