The Model 8339 Laser Ceilometer measures8339 desert cloud height and thickness, in addition to vertical visibility. Unlike other ceilometers, the Model 8339 detects up to four cloud layers simultaneously to a distance of 25,000 vertical feet. Its precision makes it ideal for applications requiring the highest level of performance and reliability, such as aviation and meteorological studies.

In order to make these readings, a laser pulse is emitted into the atmosphere and back-scatter analyzed. Using the speed of light, the altitude of each cloud base and top is determined. Due to poorly defined borders or a sparse composition, some clouds are much more difficult to measure than others. Depending on the current and historical sky conditions, an adaptive algorithm determines the number of returns needed to maintain accuracy.

Accurate measurement of cloud height and thickness in all weather conditions, including heavy precipitation and low clouds, can cause serious errors in other ceilometers. AWI has applied proprietary algorithms and digital techniques developed over more than 20 years of cloud detection research and manufacturing, allowing the Model 8339 laser ceilometer to provide accurate information even in difficult circumstances.

Sensing circuits and optimization algorithms control the pulse frequency, output power and temperature of the laser itself in order to dramatically extend its life. The Model 8339 executes an array of self-tests during operation, which detect faults and reports them. These self-tests also identify the replaceable module associated with the fault, making trouble-shooting and repair as simple as possible.

Featuring the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Phase 3 LLWAS Algorithm

AWI utilizes the field tested NCAR  Phase 3 LLWAS algorithm in order to deliver the safest and most reliable LLWAS system on the market today.  This system has been deployed at hundreds of airfields around the world.  A properly developed, sited, and functioning LLWAS system protects life and property from extremely hazardous wind shear and microburst conditions. AWI’s extensive experience in surface observation systems and sensor integration combined with our integrated display software, provides airports with an unsurpassed LLWAS system.

Detecting and Reporting Wind Shear and Microbursts

Operating aircraft during volatile wind shifts are critical environmental factors to successfully navigating a safe landing or take off.   A strong headwind causes the pilot to push the aircraft nose down to effect the proper glide slope on final approach. When under wind shear or microburst conditions, in an instant that headwind can switch to an equally strong tail wind causing a dangerous loss of air speed.  Having an early warning system that alerts the pilot of these dangerous conditions is essential for the safe operation of your airfield.

AWI's 7150 Digital Barometer Series, was designed to provide accurate pressure measurements  over a wide range of environmental temperatures and pressures.  The fully compensated digital barometer is ideal for use in demanding automated weather station applications and is fully certified by the FAA.

The barometers use pressure transducers with silicon peizoresistive absolute pressure sensors.  The pressure sensors have excellent hysteresis and repeatability characteristics, low temperature dependence, and very good long term stability.  The pressure transducers used in the 7150 series are unparalleled in terms of durability and ruggedness.

Three models are available in the 7150 series, and they vary by the number of transducers that are present.  Additional pressure transducers allow for operational redundancy, and can be used to flag the digital barometer for maintenance or replacement.  All of the barometers in the 7150 series are available with either RS-232 or RS-485 communication.

The fully FAA/ICAO compliant system generates a broadcast containing essential information for pilots approaching and departing an airfield. Having information such as approach, active runway, and weather data available on a continuous broadcast reduces controller workload while minimizing frequency congestion. With FlexIDS ATIS, these broadcasts can be created and maintained in a fraction of the time required by other systems.

Unlike some ATIS products, the FlexIDS ATIS solution can operate as a stand-alone product, or as a fully integrated component of FlexIDS, the premier air traffic management system.
